Watercolor artist - Landscapes and Abstracts

Quentin Eichbaum was born and raised in Namibia, where the scale and light of the African landscape became his first and most enduring subject. His father was a well-known watercolorist in southern Africa, and he grew up under his initial tutelage and appreciation of art. After moving to the United States, he found new landscapes equally worthy of attention: coastlines, forests, mountains, skies, driven by the particular quality of light in different seasons and places.

He holds a Master of Fine Arts degree and has studied with many acclaimed American watercolorists, continually deepening his technical range. Over time, a practice in abstraction developed alongside his landscape work. The two inform each other — landscapes sharpen his attention to the observed world; abstracts demand rigorous command of the medium and a confident grasp of composition, color, and structure.

This dual practice has given rise to what he calls abstract impressionism — work that begins in a felt sense of place and moves toward geometry, translucency, and layered structure. Semi-transparent planes of color and shape are overlaid on the landscape, dividing pictorial space and creating a dynamic compositional rhythm. Many of his paintings are neither purely representational nor purely abstract, but occupy a distinctive territory between the two — grounded enough to evoke a place, open enough to reward sustained looking and attention. In other paintings, the geometric design and shapes veer directly into abstract expressionism. But he also continues to engage more immediately with the world through painting plein air, 

He has served on the boards of several arts associations and has exhibited widely in the United States and Africa.
